Verhne-Svirskaya HPP celebrates 60th anniversary

26 September 2012

On September 26, 2012 Verhne-Svirskaya HPP celebrates 60th anniversary. The construction of hydropower plant on the turbulent Svir took many years. In the early twentieth century the river was investigated in order to use its resources to supply power to the surrounding areas.

However the unique natural conditions demanded unique technical solutions. So Svir is the first river in which stones were thrown to block the flow and construct a station. Nizhne-Svirskaya HPP started to operate first, then a team of builders moved to a new site.

The second plant of Svirsky Cascade should appear there.
Verhne-Svirskaya HPP designed in 1938 started to operate only 14 years later. In 1952 four water turbines of one of the most powerful stations in Leningrad region gave 160 MW of energy.
