A Protocol on Water Management of Lake Inari is signed in Finland

On 11 February 2015, the Authorized Representatives of Russia, Norway and Finland signed a Protocol on Water Management of Lake Inari for the first half of 2015 in Rovaniemi, Finland.

Russia was represented by Gennady Semenov, Deputy General Director for Marketing and Sales of JSC TGC-1, and Alexander Antipov, Director of the Kolskiy Branch of JSC TGC-1.

Energy and environmental specialists agreed on the schedule of water releases considering the maintenance of hydroelectric power plants (HPPs), gave an outlook of water inflow in spring 2015 and discussed the issues of climate change affecting water resource usage. 

“The trilateral cooperation is primarily aimed at preserving the ecology of Lake Inari and creating the best possible environmental conditions for flora and fauna”, said Alexander Antipov, Director of the Kolskiy Branch of JSC TGC-1.

Located in Finland, Lake Inari is a natural reservoir for Russian and Norwegian HPPs on the Paatsjoki River.

The trilateral agreement on Water Management of Lake Inari using the Kaitakosken HPP was signed by the Soviet Union, Norway and Finland in 1959. The agreement provides for water level control in Finnish Lake Inari and its effluent, the Paatsjoki River, which flows through Finland, Russia and Norway.

Seven HPPs are located on the river, with five of them forming the Paz HPPs Cascade of JSC TGC-1 and two belonging to the energy sector of Norway.
