Emergency response exercises at the Nizhnesvirskaya HPP of JSC TGC-1

On April 2, 2015, an emergency response exercises for hydro electric power plants in the condition of flood water passage were conducted at the Nizhnesvirskaya HPP of JSC TGC-1.

Operating personnel, diving group and volunteer fire brigade of the HPP, EMERCOM division in Leningrad Oblast, and ambulance took part in the exercises. Exercises evaluation commission comprised of JSC TGC-1 senior management, representatives of EMERCOM division in Leningrad Oblast  and Administration of Lodeynopolsky District.

Interaction scenario in the condition of increased water level of the Svir river was rehearsed during the exercises.  The course of drill was corrupted due to the following incurred emergencies: equipment inflammation, ice passage through the HPP's facilities, as well as existence of an injured person.

As per legend, the recorded level of the head water was 18.1 m, and that of the lower water was 8.49 m. An emergency alarm went off due to generator No.1 inflammation.  The operating personnel switched off and grounded the generator, opened spillway gates in order to ensure the HPP sustainable operation and stable level of the head water. 

The plant's shift foreman called EMERCOM and ambulance. Volunteer fire brigade started extinguishing fire, there was one person injured.  While ambulance had not reached yet, the first aid to the injured was provided by personnel on duty.  Arriving fire brigade extinguished fire. Alarm display informed about damage of trash racks.  The diving group inspected the generator's trash racks.  The simulated emergency was eliminated.

"We witnessed behaviour and skills drill of the HPP's operating personnel, members of volunteer fire brigade, divers, EMERCOM of Russia specialists, and ambulance in emergency situation", remarked Yuri Marakin, JSC TGC-1 Deputy General Director for Corporate Protection. ''JSC TGC-1 conducts similar exercises annually in order to ensure smooth operation in time of spring floods. The exercises today demonstrated high level of interaction between the HPP personnel and invited participants; everything was on the high level, with temporally requirements being observed. The emergency was prevented, thus, I give the highest rate to the exercises”.
