Iovskaya HPP Turns 55

28 December 2015

Dec. 28, 2015 marks the 55th anniversary of the launch of JSC TGC-1 Iovskaya HPP located in Zarechensk settlement in the southern part of the Murmansk Oblast.

The construction process was accelerated due to the use of innovative construction and installation methods. For a long time, the HPP was used as an experimental site. For example, it was the first HPP in the world to be equipped with asynchronised synchronous generators with excitation magnetic axis. They were designed by World Chess Champion and Doctor of Engineering Mikhail Botvinnik. Since their implementation at Iovskaya HPP, the generators have been widely used in various industrial areas. In the 1980s, all HPP equipment was replaced.

"In 2014, we completed major renovations at Iovskaya HPP. We installed new turbines and replaced control and excitation systems and other auxiliary equipment. Therefore, the reliability of energy supply to consumers significantly increased, and now equipment can be controlled remotely, which marks a new stage in HPP history," said Nikita Khanchin, the Director of Iovskaya HPP.
