Nizhne-Tulomskaya HPP of PJSC TGC-1 celebrates 80th anniversary

January 13, 2017 will mark 80 years since Nizhne-Tulomskaya HPP of PJSC   TGC-1 has been put into operation. The plant was constructed according to GOELRO plan in Murmashi village, the Murmansk Region, in order to facilitate development of the industry in the Kola peninsula and provide with electricity facilities of strategic importance, i.e. railway, the Northern Fleet.

“In severe climatic conditions, with limited material supply and low level of labour mechanisation it took three years to construct HPP. One of the peculiarities of its construction was represented by the fact that works on spillway units, dam and power house as well as landscaping works on the territory of Murashi village were carried out simultaneously,” said Alexander Smirnov, Chief Engineer of TGC-1 Tulomskiye and Serebryanskiye HPPs Cascade. 

The plant did not stop working even during the Great Patriotic War. For a long time Northern Subarctic regions were provided with electricity by the sole HPP facility.

Today Nizhne-Tulomskaya HPP is a part of the Tuloma and Serebryanskiye HPPs Cascade, the most powerful HPPs cascade in the Murmansk Region. HPP installed capacity makes 56 MW.

“In order to increase the plant's safety equipment upgrading is being conducted: we introduce modern excitation systems and hydroelectric unit speed governors, automate control systems, have deployed Process Information Exchange System with an automated system operator system, and perform major repairs of the main and auxiliary equipment according to the schedule. In 2015 a large-scale reconstruction of Nizhne-Tulomskaya HPP spillway unit started, which is to result in a significantly higher level of the operation safety of HPP,” added Alexander Smirnov.

The plant is the pride of the Kola energy system from ecological point of view as its unique fish ladder for salmon migrating up the river to spawn was marked by conservationists as one of the best ones in the world.
